– Artificial intelligence provides new opportunities for students and teachers, but also many new concerns. We know that students use AI a lot, but also that many are unsure of what is the correct use. This is understandable, because AI challenges the boundaries of learning, exams and assessment, says Minister of Research and Higher Education Sigrun Aasland in a press release from the Ministry of Education.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has major implications for higher education. The government is now setting up a committee to advise on how the technology can benefit students, universities, colleges and society.
Developments in AI have been very rapid in recent years. A large proportion of students report using artificial intelligence tools in their studies. Many students are calling for clearer rules of the road.
– No one should doubt the quality of the education students receive from Norwegian universities and university colleges. The question is not how much or little artificial intelligence should be included in the education, but how we adapt the education to a new technological everyday life. We need rules of the road for how we can and should use AI in higher education. The committee will give us that, and I am glad that they are now starting the work, says Aasland.
The committee will be led by Anders Malthe-Sørenssen, professor of physics at the University of Oslo, and will submit its recommendation as a NOU by October 1, 2026..
