Research interest

Mardal's research interest lies in the field of computational mechanics with particular focus on biomechanical applications in medicine. Specifically, the recent topic of brain clearance during sleep through multi-physics modeling involving for instance fluid-structure interaction and poro-elastic couplings. The advancement of these applications rely on accurate, efficient and robust numerical algorithms where both finite element methods and neural networks are actively investigated.

Short Bio

Mardal obtained his PhD in 2002 at Simula Research Laboratory and was a fulltime researcher there until 2014 when he became an Ass. Prof at the Department of Mathematics in Oslo, and later full professor in 2015.

Previously he was a group leader in the Centre of Excellence “Biomedical Computing” at the Simula Research Laboratory. Currently he is a PI of three research projects “Alzheimer´s physics”, “Scientific Machine Learning”, and “Computational Hydrology”. He has written more than a 100 papers and several books.
