Responsibilities
The room manager is responsible for informing cleaning staff, via the cleaning supervisor for the relevant cleaning area, about hazards and safety measures within their area of responsibility.
The Property Department (EA) is responsible for informing units about changes of cleaning staff in the unit’s area and for providing training for cleaning staff.
Cleaning Instructions
- Laboratories must be cleaned during the University’s core hours, from 09:00 to 14:30, unless otherwise agreed with the room manager.
- Clutter or spillages that prevent the cleaner from carrying out their work must be reported to the cleaning supervisor. In such cases, cleaning must not be carried out.
- Clean mops must be used when cleaning laboratories. The same mop must not be used for shared areas, offices, etc.
- In some laboratories, doors will be marked with red and green stop signs.
- Deviations from normal cleaning procedures must be reported through “Send a message to EA”.
- When cleaning laboratories, safety glasses must be worn where signage requires this. This applies particularly to chemistry laboratories.
- Cleaning staff must be familiar with:
- The location of first-aid equipment.
- The identity of the room manager.
- Any hazards present in the laboratory, and the measures taken by the unit in the event of spillages or accidents.
- Rooms with specific cleaning instructions. These rooms are marked and identified in the cleaning plan: isotope laboratories (C-labs), NMR facilities, GMO plant laboratories, cytotoxic drug laboratories and Containment Level 2 (P2) laboratories. These must be included in the digital cleaning plans.
- Only floors must be cleaned routinely in laboratories. For special assignments, benches may be cleaned, but only after the laboratory has been cleared for such cleaning.
- Bins for general waste and plastic waste must be emptied by cleaning staff.
- Hazardous waste is labelled and must not be removed by cleaning staff.
- If an incident occurs in a laboratory and is caused by a cleaner, the room manager must be contacted.
- Cleaning staff clean hand-wash basins and replenish soap and paper towels.
