Sample preparation and mass spectrometric quantification of intact peptides
Conferral summary
Main research findings
Monitoring health and detecting doping in sports often require frequent blood tests, which can be painful, time-consuming, and costly. This thesis presents the development of a small, easy-to-use sampler based on antibodies. The device can capture a specific model protein directly from a tiny drop of blood obtained through a simple finger prick. Because the capture occurs on the sampler itself, manual laboratory steps are eliminated, making the process faster and more efficient.
The sampler demonstrated reliable performance with real human samples, producing results that were in accordance with international guidelines. It requires only a minimal amount of blood and proved robust and reliable when compared with commercial tests. Built on a paper-based platform, the sampler offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for blood sampling.
This smart sampler has the potential to make blood testing less invasive, reduce the burden on laboratories, and improve accessibility for routine monitoring, whether for patients requiring regular follow-ups or for testing outside traditional clinical settings. In short, it represents a promising step toward faster, simpler, and more convenient blood testing in everyday contexts.
