Abstract The complex high-frequency conductance of high-mobility n-GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures was determined in magnetic fields 12–18 T using the Surface Acoustic Waves technique. Analysis of frequency and temperature dependences of conductance showed that in the investigated magnetic field range and at low temperatures, T<200 mK, the electron system forms a Wigner crystal deformed due to pinning by disorder. We have also defined an effective melting temperature of the Wigner crystal.

A method to measure the electrical connectivity between square superconducting plates joined by weak link interfaces is presented. It is based on observation of lines where the flow of critical current abruptly changes direction due to the presence of weak links, and the confinement created by the shape of the sample. The method is demonstrated using magneto-optical imaging (MOI) of systems consisting of up to 2 x 2 plates joined to form a larger square. The samples used in this study are Nb films with weak links created by focused ion beam machining. Common features are found in the current flow patterns, which allow to measure the electrical connectivity between the plates by observing an angle between pairs of lines indicating where the current abruptly changes flow direction, so-called discontinuity, or d-lines.

The GABA molecule is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Through binding to post-synaptic neurons, GABA reduces the neuronal excitability by hyperpolarization. Correct binding between the GABA molecules and its receptors relies on molecular recognition. Earlier studies suggest that recognition is determined by the geometries of the molecule and its receptor. We employed dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) to study the conformation and dielectric properties of the GABA molecule under physiologically relevant laboratory conditions. The dielectric properties of GABA investigated have given us new insights about the GABA molecule, such as how they interact with each other and with water molecules at different temperatures (22°C and 37.5°C). Higher temperature leads to lower viscosity, thus lower relaxation time. The change in the GABA relaxation time due to concentration change is more associated with the solution viscosity than with the GABA dipole moment. A resonance behavior was observed with high GABA concentrations at physiological temperature, where there might be a phase transition at a certain temperature for a given GABA concentration that leads to a sudden change of the dielectric properties.

We extend the thermodynamic approach for the description of the thermal Hall effect in two-dimensional superconductors above the critical temperature, where fluctuation Cooper pairs contribute to the conductivity, as well as in disordered normal metals where the particle-particle channel is important. We express the Hall heat conductivity in terms of the product of temperature derivatives of the chemical potential and of the magnetization of the system. Based on this general expression, we derive the analytical formalism that qualitatively reproduces the superlinear increase of the thermal Hall conductivity with the decrease of temperature observed in a large variety of experimentally studied systems [Grissonnanche et al., Nature (London) 571, 376 (2019)]. We also predict a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermal Hall conductivity in the regime of quantum fluctuations, in the vicinity of the second critical field and at very low temperatures.

We theoretically analyze two setups of low-energy single-photon counters based on Josephson junctions (JJs). For this, we propose two simple and general models based on the macroscopic quantum tunneling formalism (MQT). The first setup is similar to the photon counter based on the “cold-electron bolometer” (CEB), where the JJ replaces the CEB in the center of the superconducting antenna. In the second setup, the JJ is capacitively coupled to the antenna. We derive the Hamiltonians for the two setups, and we write the Schrödinger equations, taking into account both the antenna and the JJ. The quantum particles of the MQT models move in two-dimensional potential landscapes, which are parabolic along one direction and may have the form of a washboard potential along another direction. Such a potential landscape has a series of local minima, separated by saddle points. If the particle is prepared in the initial state in the metastable “ground state” of a local minimum, then the photon absorption causes it to jump into an excited state. If the excitation energy is bigger than the potential barrier seen by the quantum particle (the difference between the ground state and the saddle point), the photon is detected. The models are simple and allow us to do mostly analytical calculations. We show that the two setups are equivalent from the MQT point of view since one Hamiltonian can be transformed into the other by changes in variables. For typical values of the JJ and antenna parameters, the setups may work as counters of photons of wavelengths up to at least 1 cm. Dark count rates due to the phase particle tunneling directly from the ground state into the running state have also been evaluated.

The magnetic anisotropy of superconducting niobium films of different thickness was investigated using magneto-optical imaging. A wide range of anisotropic behaviors was generated by freezing in different in-plane external magnetic fields with magnitude up to 1.12 kOe. The critical fields for the parallel configuration of the different samples were calculated, taking into account the strong deviation of the superconducting properties at small thicknesses. Above their lower in-plane critical field, the films are in the mixed state containing coplanar vortices. In structurally isotropic Nb films, when applying a perpendicular magnetic field, the frozen-in vortices were seen to guide the perpendicular ones. It is shown that the anisotropy increases with both the film thickness and the magnitude of the in-plane field. The results demonstrate that the field-induced anisotropy is a highly versatile way to manipulate vortex matter in film superconductors.

Stability of the vortex matter—magnetic flux lines penetrating into the material—in type-II superconductor films is crucially important for their application. If some vortices get detached from pinning centres, the energy dissipated by their motion will facilitate further depinning, and may trigger an electromagnetic breakdown. In this paper, we review recent theoretical and experimental results on development of the above mentioned thermomagnetic instability. Starting from linear stability analysis for the initial critical-state flux distribution we then discuss a numerical procedure allowing to analyze developed flux avalanches. As an example of this approach we consider ultra-fast dendritic flux avalanches in thin superconducting disks. At the initial stage the flux front corresponding to the dendrite's trunk moves with velocity up to 100 km/s. At later stage the almost constant velocity leads to a specific propagation regime similar to ray optics. We discuss this regime observed in superconducting films coated by normal strips. Finally, we discuss dramatic enhancement of the anisotropy of the flux patterns due to specific dynamics. In this way we demonstrate that the combination of the linear stability analysis with the numerical approach provides an efficient framework for understanding the ultra-fast coupled nonlocal dynamics of electromagnetic fields and dissipation in superconductor films.

In any general cycle of measurement, feedback, and erasure, the measurement will reduce the entropy of the system when information about the state is obtained, while erasure, according to Landauer's principle, is accompanied by a corresponding increase in entropy due to the compression of logical and physical phase space. The total process can in principle be fully reversible. A measurement error reduces the information obtained and the entropy decrease in the system. The erasure still gives the same increase in entropy, and the total process is irreversible. Another consequence of measurement error is that a bad feedback is applied, which further increases the entropy production if the proper protocol adapted to the expected error rate is not applied. We consider the effect of measurement error on a realistic single-electron box Szilard engine, and we find the optimal protocol for the cycle as a function of the desired power P and error ɛ.

Complex systems close to their critical state can exhibit abrupt transitions—avalanches—between their metastable states. It is a challenging task to understand the mechanism of the avalanches and control their behavior. Here, we investigate microwave stimulation of avalanches in the so-called vortex matter of type-II superconductors—a system of interacting Abrikosov vortices close to the critical (Bean) state. Our main finding is that the avalanche incubation strongly depends on the excitation frequency, a completely unexpected behavior observed close to the so-called depinning frequencies. Namely, the triggered vortex avalanches in Pb superconducting films become effectively inhibited approaching the critical temperature or critical magnetic field when the microwave stimulus is close to the vortex depinning frequency. We suggest a simple model explaining the observed counterintuitive behaviors as a manifestation of the strongly nonlinear dependence of the driven vortex core size on the microwave excitation intensity. This paves the way to controlling avalanches in superconductor-based devices through their nonlinear response. © 2017 American Physical Society

We demonstrate that the entropy per electron of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) exhibits quantized peaks at resonances between the chemical potential and electron levels of size quantization. In the limit of no scattering, the peaks depend only on the subband quantization number and are independent of material parameters, shape of the confining potential, electron effective mass, and temperature. The quantization of entropy per electron is a signature of a Lifshitz phase transition in a 2DEG. In the presence of stationary disorder, the magnitude of peaks decreases. Its deviation from the quantized values is a direct measure of the disorder induced smearing of the electronic density of states. ©2016 American Physical Society

Thermomagnetic avalanches in superconducting films propagating extremely fast
while forming unpredictable patterns, represent a serious threat for the performance
of devices based on such materials. It is shown here that a normal-metal frame
surrounding a selected region inside the film area can provide efficient protection
from the avalanches during their propagation stage. Protective behavior is
confirmed by magneto-optical imaging experiments on NbN films equipped with
Cu and Al frames, and also by performing numerical simulations. Experimentally,
it is found that while conventional flux creep is not affected by the frames,
the dendritic avalanches are partially or fully screened by them. The level of
screening depends on the ratio of the sheet conductance of the metal and the
superconductor in the resistive state, and for ratios much larger than unity the
screening is very efficient.

We have made a simple and natural modification of a recent quantum refrigerator model presented by Cleuren et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 120603 (2012)]. The original model consist of two metal leads acting as heat baths and a set of quantum dots that allow for electron transport between the baths. It was shown to violate the dynamic third law of thermodynamics (the unattainability principle, which states that cooling to absolute zero in finite time is impossible). By taking into consideration the finite energy level spacing Δ, in metals we restore the third law while keeping all of the original model's thermodynamic properties intact down to the limit of kBT∼Δ, where the cooling rate is quenched. The spacing Δ depends on the confinement of the electrons in the lead and therefore, according to our result larger samples (with smaller level spacing), could be cooled efficiently to lower absolute temperatures than smaller ones. However, a large lead makes the assumption of instant equilibration of electrons implausible; in reality one would only cool a small part of the sample and we would have a nonequilibrium situation. This property is expected to be model independent and raises the question whether we can find an optimal size for the lead that is to be cooled. ©2016 American Physical Society

The stability of superconducting films with respect to oscillatory precursor modes for thermomagnetic avalanches is investigated theoretically. The results for the onset threshold show that previous treatments of nonoscillatory modes have predicted much higher thresholds. Thus, in film superconductors, oscillatory modes are far more likely to cause thermomagnetic breakdown. This explains the experimental fact that flux avalanches in film superconductors can occur even at very small ramping rates of the applied magnetic field. Closed expressions for the threshold magnetic field and temperature, as well oscillation frequency, are derived for different regimes of the oscillatory thermomagnetic instability.

Experimental evidence of wave properties of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films is reported.
Using magneto-optical imaging the propagation of dendrites across boundaries between a bare NbN film and
areas coated by a Cu layer was visualized, and it was found that the propagation is refracted in full quantitative
agreement with Snell’s law. For the studied film of 170 nm thickness and a 0.9 μmthick metal layer, the refractive
index was close to n = 1.4. The origin of the refraction is believed to be caused by the dendrites propagating as
an electromagnetic shock wave, similar to damped modes considered previously for normal metals. The analogy
is justified by the large dissipation during the avalanches raising the local temperature significantly. Additional
time-resolved measurements of voltage pulses generated by segments of the dendrites traversing an electrode
confirm the consistency of the adopted physical picture.

Electrical conductivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance of In2O3:Sn thin films deposited on a glass substrates at different temperatures and oxygen pressures, have been investigated in the temperature range 4.2–300 K. The observed temperature dependences of resistivity for films deposited at 230 °C as well as at nominally room temperatures were typical for metallic transport of electrons except temperature dependence of resistivity of the In2O3:Sn film deposited in the oxygen deficient atmosphere. The electrical measurements were accompanied by AFM and SEM studies of structural properties, as well as by XPS analysis. It is established that changes of morphology and crystallinity of ITO films modify the low-temperature behavior of resistivity, which still remains typical for metallic transport. This is not the case for the oxygen deficient ITO layer. XPS analysis shows that grown in situ oxygen deficient ITO films have enhanced DOS between the Fermi level and the valence band edge. The extra localized states behave as acceptors leading to a compensation of n-type ITO. That can explain lower n-type conductivity in this material crossing over to a Mott-type hopping at low temperatures. Results for the low temperature measurements of stoichiometric ITO layers indicate that they do not show any trace of metal-to-insulator transition even at 4.2 K. We conclude that, although ITO is considered as a highly doped wide-band gap semiconductor, its low-temperature properties are very different from those of conventional highly doped semiconductors.

Combined voltage and magneto-optical study of magnetic flux flow in superconducting NbN films is reported. The nanosecond-scale voltage pulses appearing during thermomagnetic avalanches have been recorded in films partially coated by a metal layer. Simultaneous magneto-optical imaging and voltage measurements allowed the pulses to be associated with individual flux branches penetrating the superconductor below the metal coating. From detailed characteristics of pulse and flux branches, the electrical field in the superconductor is found to be in the range of 5-50 kV/m, while the propagation speed of the avalanche during its final stage is found to be close to 5 km/s.
