How the Standard Model was built. Historical Aspects

Jan Olav Eeg, FI

Weekly Theory Seminar.

Abstract.

I will describe how I personally experienced how the present Standard Model of particle physics was built, starting when I became a master student in 1967, when the existence of quarks were still controversial.

I will describe how the development of the Standard Model was defined partially through the  SLAC experiments from 1969 (trying to split the proton), and especially through the discovery of the charm quark in 1974. I also describe to some extent the construction of the Standard Model and (if time enough) how it was tested through the decays of K-mesons.
