Submission of the master’s thesis and examination

The final examination in the master’s programme consists of submitting the master’s thesis and giving a public presentation followed by an oral examination.

Requirements before the examination

The following must be in place prior to submission:

  • The bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification, including all academic requirements, must be completed and passed by the semester before you submit the thesis.
  • The semester fee must be paid and you must have registered for the semester.
  • The theoretical coursework in the master’s degree must be completed and passed.

Deadline for submission of the master’s thesis

The deadline for submitting the master’s thesis is normally 15th of May. The deadline for your master’s thesis is registered in StudentWeb. The thesis must be submitted no later than three weeks before the final presentation and examination. It is your supervisor who is responsible for finding an external examiner and agreeing on a time for the examination with you and the examiner.

Submission

The master’s thesis must be submitted in the digital examination system Inspera. You are responsible for familiarising yourself with how to do this before your submission deadline.

See information about submission in Inspera here

Printing of the master’s thesis

There is no requirement to submit a paper version of the thesis to the Department of Physics.

However, the Department of Physics covers the cost of printing four copies for personal use for those who wish to have this done. Printing must then be ordered from the Graphic Center at the University of Oslo. The cost centre to be stated is 15100000 and the sub‑project code is 102424009.

If you wish to have your thesis printed, the UiO Graphic Center requires that one of their standard templates is used. If you need to have your thesis printed, you should therefore consider using one of these templates both for submission and when ordering printing. Here you can find more information about thesis printing and templates from the Graphic Center.

Final presentation and examination

After the master’s thesis has been submitted and it has been confirmed that it is awarded at least an E/pass, the master’s programme is concluded with an oral master’s examination, which consists of a public presentation of the thesis and an examination/conversation with the examination committee.

The presentation should last approximately 30 minutes. You are to provide an overview of the master’s thesis. The presentation should be at a level that allows master’s students in other research groups at the Department of Physics to understand it.

After the public presentation, there will be an oral examination/conversation about the thesis with the examination committee, which normally lasts 60–90 minutes.

The presentation, together with the examination/conversation, may have an adjusting effect on the grade awarded for the master’s thesis.

Information about the time and place of the master’s examination will be published on the Department of Physics’ website. The master’s thesis will be made publicly available in the National Research Archive.

Diploma

You will receive a digital diploma once you have passed the master’s examination and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has registered your degree. If you need a paper diploma, please contact MN Student Information.
