The "No Seal, no deal" GeoWednesday-lecture on YouTube

The lecture: "No Seal, no Deal – Evaluating seal quality of CO2 storage sites, offshore Norway", was helt by Md Nazmul Haque Mondol, Professor at Dept of Geosciences, on the 18. October 2023. The recorded GeoWednesday lecture is now available and can be seen on YouTube.

Introduction

Geological storage of CO2 in saline aquifers or depleted oil/gas reservoirs is a paramount solution to reduce human-induced CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.  Many nations are planning large-scale CO2 storage projects worldwide to follow the Paris Accords to keep global warming below 1.5 to 20C. Seal or caprock quality is highly critical for any safe and successful CO2 storage.

The presentation by Professor Md Nazmul Haque Mondol will focus on seal quality assessment of potential CO2 storage in 3 exploitation licenses EL001 (Aurora), EL002 (Smeaheia) and EL004 (Luna), in the Troll area, offshore Norway. The ultimate goal is to show how the seal units of saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs are characterised using multi-disciplinary techniques of geology, geophysics, petrophysics, rock physics, geomechanics and machine learning. He is introduced by Professor Jens Jahren, also Dept of Geosciences, UiO.

About the GeoWednesdays lectures

Once a month, researchers at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, will tell about their research and introduce the geosciences to a wide audience, from first-year undergraduates, colleagues to interested in general. It is possible to ask questions after the lectures. All interested are welcome.

The lectures are held in the Science Library in Vilhelm Bjerknes' hus, Campus Blindern, University of Oslo.
