GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Why Warmer Winters are Worrisome: Contrasting Snow Cover Changes Drive Arctic Climate Feedbacks

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 10th of March @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building or via videolink using Zoom. The seminar is helt by Frans-Jan Parmentier, MetOs/GEO.

Seminar by Frans-Jan Parmentier, MetOs/The Department of Geosciences, UiO:

Why Warmer Winters are Worrisome: Contrasting Snow Cover Changes Drive Arctic Climate Feedback

Abstract: The Arctic is warming rapidly, especially in winter, which has a strong impact on snow cover and northern ecosystems. For example, the absence of snow combined with cold temperatures can lead to plant-damaging frost droughts, since it triggers water loss from vegetation. Despite an overall shortening of the snow season, large parts of the Arctic will still see increases in mid-winter snow depth due to an increased availability of atmospheric moisture. This divergent pattern in snow depth has thus far been overlooked in most studies of arctic change, but the implications for ecosystem productivity and permafrost carbon loss are large. In this talk, I will highlight outcomes from the WINTERPROOF project to show how divergent snow cover changes will impact high latitude climate feedbacks

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
