GeoHyd Lunch Seminar: Avalanche research and consulting at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute

Welcome to our GeoHyd Lunch Seminar on Friday 26th of April @ 12:15 in Aud. 1 in the Geology Building, or via videolink using Zoom. The seminar is held by Christian Jaedicke (UiO / NGI).

Seminar by Christian Jaedicke (UiO / NGI):

Avalanche research and consulting at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute

Abstract: Avalanches are one of the major natural hazards in Norway. Large areas of the country are covered by terrain that is steep enough to produce avalanches and the climate provides plenty of snow. While the annual number of fatalities of 4-5 victims is rather stable and mostly connected to recreational activities, the implications for land use planning and infrastructure are immense. Avalanche research in Norway has always focused on providing practical solutions that enables the society to actively manage avalanche hazards, such as tools for hazard mapping, avalanche forecasting and physical mitigation measures. The presentation will cover some of the history of avalanche research at NGI, present recent advances and give an impression of our research facilities on the Stryn mountains. The presentation will also take a look at the current ideas and challenges in the education of future avalanche experts.
