GeoHyd Lunch Seminar: Can we geo-engineer a way out of climate change and sea-level rise?

Welcome to our GeoHyd Lunch Seminar on Friday 28th of November @ 12:15 in Aud. 2 in the Geology Building. The seminar is held by Regine Hock (UiO).

Seminar by: Regine Hock, Department of Geosciences, UiO

Can we geo-engineer a way out of climate change and sea-level rise?

Abstract: In a recent paper (Siegert et al., 2025, Frontiers in Science) we evaluated five widely discussed polar geoengineering concepts: sea curtains in Antarctic ocean water, basal ice sheet water removal, sea ice management, ocean fertilization and stratospheric aerosol injection. I will discuss these techniques and highlight the significant issues and risks relating to technological availability, logistical feasibility, cost, unintended adverse consequences, environmental damage, scalability (in space and time), governance, and ethics.

The GeoHyd seminars are normally held in Auditorium 2 in the Geology Building, Blindern (map) but it is also possible to follow some of the seminars on Zoom.

Videolink to the lectures will be sent to the e-mail list geohyd-alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo mailing list send an email to Anita Sørlie.

About the seminar series

The talks in GeoHyd Lunch Seminar Series are offered by the Section for Geography and Hydrology (GeoHyd), Dept. of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The seminars are announced as lunch seminars so bring your lunch if you want to.

The seminars are open for everyone interested, and especially students are welcome.
