ILLU Science and Art - bridging local narratives and scientific understanding of climate changes in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)
Abstract: Rapid environmental change in the fjords and coastal systems of Kalaallit Nunaat, driven by retreating sea ice and glaciers, presents significant uncertainty for local livelihoods, including fishing, hunting, tourism, and infrastructure development. While scientific interest in the region is increasing, meaningful integration of local and Indigenous knowledge remains limited by a lack of shared arenas for dialogue and collaboration. In response, the University of Bergen, in partnership with Avannaata Kommunia, has established ILLU – Science and Art in Ilulissat, situated by the UNESCO listed Ilulissat Icefjord.
The venue provides an inclusive space encompassing workshops, exhibitions, communal areas, and residency facilities designed to foster sustained engagement among community members, artists, and visiting scientists. By facilitating co learning, trust building, and the exchange of narratives and expertise, ILLU seeks to enhance the relevance and accessibility of research in the region. This presentation outlines the development, experiences, and challenges encountered in establishing ILLU and invites discussion on future directions for a collaborative model of research in and with communities in Kalaallit Nunaat.
