GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Model inversion using data assimilation to learn from Earth observations in cold regions

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 4th of June @ 12:15 via videolink (Zoom). The seminar is helt by Kristoffer Aalstad, Dept. of Geosciences.

Seminar by Kristoffer Aalstad, Researcher, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, entitled:

Model inversion using data assimilation to learn from Earth observations in cold regions

Abstract

Mapping from observations to the states that may have generated them falls under the umbrella of inverse problems. The abundance of these problems has fueled the development of Data Assimilation (DA) schemes that fuse uncertain information from models and observations. Notable applications include atmospheric reanalysis and numerical weather prediction. The added value that DA can bring to Earth Observations (EO) as a generalized retrieval algorithm is much less appreciated. We present two different inverse problems, snowpack reconstruction using satellite data and surface flux inversion using drone swarms, showing how DA helps us to make the most out of emerging EO in cold regions.
