GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Seismic arrays for cryosphere monitoring

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 11th of November @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building or via videolink using Zoom. The seminar is helt by Andreas Köhler, NORSAR.

Seminar by Andreas Köhler, NORSAR.

Seismic arrays for cryosphere monitoring

Abstract: Arrays of seismic sensors outperform single seismometers when it comes to detection of weak seismic signals since multi-sensor (array) processing allows for noise reduction and therefore lowering the event detection threshold. Moreover, seismic arrays allow measuring the velocity and propagation direction of seismic signals which in turn improves event location and is beneficial when analyzing the continuous background seismic noise. This presentation includes a brief introduction into seismic array processing and an overview about current arrays deployed in Svalbard and mainland Norway. The second part focusses on different examples on how seismic arrays have and are being used for cryoseismological studies in Svalbard, i.e., monitoring of glacier calving, permafrost, and local glacier dynamics. Finally, a recent array deployment in Hornsund, Svalbard, and an upcoming installation in Antarctica are presented.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Videolink to the lecture will be sent to the mailinglists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita
