Oslo joint seminar in atmospheric, ocean and climate science, Jan. 31

Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm) and lunch (sandwiches) will be served on a “first-come-first-served”-basis.

Title:

Short term predictions of oceanic drift.

Abstract:

Short term predictions of oceanic drift are important in time critical operations, for example for oil spill mitigation and search-and-rescue support. The transient upper ocean response to atmospheric forcing needs to be correctly modeled, and the role of wave-mean flow interactions are particularly important. Since many objects of interest are in the wave zone, a better understanding of the details of the dynamics at the air-sea interface is needed. A clear separation of the forcing on such objects due to wind, waves and ocean currents is needed in drift models, both to reduce the dependence on empirical formulae and to make better use of drift data collected in field experiments.
