Title: Air pollution impacts on the carbon cycle

Speaker: Nadine Unger, University of Exeter

Speaker:

Nadine Unger, Univ Exeter

Abstract:

The short-lived climate forcers, ozone and aerosols, influence the land carbon cycle. Surface ozone damages vegetation photosynthesis through stomatal uptake, while aerosols influence photosynthesis by increasing diffuse radiation. The recent 2018 IPCC Special Seport on the Impacts of Global Warming of 1.5 °C specifically emphasized the effects of short-lived climate forcer mitigation on terrestrial ecosystems and the carbon cycle as a key uncertainty. Here, I present results from recent studies that apply a fully coupled global Earth system model and multiple observational datasets to quantify the (i) combined impacts of ozone and haze pollution on the land carbon cycle in China (ii) fire air pollution impacts on global terrestrial productivity (iii) mitigation of ozone damage to the world’s land ecosystems by source emission sector.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm) and lunch (sandwiches) will be served on a “first-come-first-served”-basis.
