Abstract:

The 2010 Russian heatwave still stands out as an incredibly unusual, and damaging, event in recent climate. Atmospheric blocking played a key role in this event, providing persistent anticyclonic conditions which allowed the heat to develop. Here, we show that summer blocks in this region are particularly influenced by planetary scale dynamics, distinguishing them from many other blocks. This event appears to have been supported by an unusual Rossby wave teleconnection pattern connected to the La NiƱa event that summer. Furthermore, we present model evidence that this teleconnection pattern has changed in recent decades due to a warming trend in the tropical oceans.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm).
