Abstract:

A Lagrangian view of MOSAIC, the largest polar expedition: One year of atmospheric transport in the Arctic, seen through trajectories

From September 2019 to October 2020, the research vessel Polarstern sailed for the first year-round expedition in the central Arctic. The ship, starting from Tromsø, Norway, spent a year drifting through the Arctic Ocean, trapped in ice. Involving 80 different research institutions, the expedition aimed to investigate the complex climate processes in the central Arctic, to improve their representation in global climate models. The campaign provided a large collection of continuous observations of atmospheric properties and composition over the area. To support the interpretation and the identification of the transport processes and the atmospheric phenomena associated with the observed data, a series of FLEXPART simulations have been performed along the whole year and coupled with satellite images of sea-ice cover, to help discriminate the processes of land-atmosphere exchange from the ones with sea-ice and open ocean. We present here a summary of some of the most striking results of the campaign where the atmospheric transport played a central role, including the description of warm intrusion phenomena and the aerosol processes over the Central Artic Ocean.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

  • Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
  • This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
  • All seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1 pm).
