Abstract:
Ocean and atmosphere exhibit a range of processes that modulate the local dynamics, mixing, and turbulence at varied scales. In this talk I will primarily focus on different geophysical flow configurations that we replicated in a laboratory setting to delve deeper into the physical mechanisms of mixing, turbulence, and energetics. I will primarily discuss results from three flow configurations, (a) entrainment dynamics of forced plumes in a linearly stratified ambient, (b) mixing in stratified-shear gravity currents, and (c) evolution of atmospheric cold pools in the presence of mean flow. Using state-of-the art measurement techniques, we measure various higher order statistics that help us build empirical parameterization that could be used for finetuning numerical models routinely used in geophysical flows. If time permits, I will also very briefly touch upon rotation convection and ocean modeling work done by our research group.
What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):
- Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
- This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
- Normally seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1pm).
