Abstract:
In this presentation I will show how model emulators trained on regional-scale and large-eddy cloud simulations can be used to understand the behaviour of warm and mixed-phase stratocumulus and cumulus clouds. The challenge with both cloud types is that their simulated behaviour is affected by several interacting environmental factors and model uncertainties. I will show results from emulators of a large-eddy model that quantify how several cloud-controlling factors (including aerosols) affect the stratocumulus to cumulus transition. I will also show emulators of a mixed-phase cold air outbreak case exploring the effects of ice-nucleating particles, droplet number and several secondary ice production processes. I will discuss the potential implications for our ability to constrain the magnitude of aerosol-cloud forcing and feedback.
What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):
- Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
- This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
- Normally seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1pm).
