Abstract:

Assessing the environmental and health risks of organic atmospheric pollutants requires accurate prediction of their atmospheric lifetimes. This study presents the Community Multiscale Air Quality Loss Timescale Parameterization (CMAQ-LTP), a set of simple formulae that enable instantaneous atmospheric lifetime predictions for novel organic compounds. These formulae were developed using CMAQ simulations in which we systematically added 175 pseudo-species spanning broad ranges of volatility, water solubility, and OH reactivity to quantify their influence on atmospheric removal processes. The resulting parameterization accounts for chemical reaction, dry deposition, and wet deposition pathways, incorporating critical phase partitioning effects often overlooked in simplified fate models. CMAQ-LTP provides a computationally efficient tool for rapid screening of atmospheric persistence, enabling improved risk assessment of hazardous air pollutants including PFAS, PAHs, and other compounds of environmental concern.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

  • Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
  • This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
  • Normally seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1pm).
