Abstract:
2025 has been witness to several significant episodes of long-range atmospheric pollution transport with a third consecutive extreme wildfire season in boreal North America and multiple outbreaks of Saharan dust crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides a wide range of near-real time operational products that are well suited for evaluating the evolution of these episodes as they are occurring. Products such as wildfire emissions estimates, and the global and regional analyses and forecasts are routinely monitored and evaluated on-the-fly against available independent measurements to identify potential discrepancies on the one hand and news stories on the other. In this presentation I will present an overview of the near-real-time CAMS products and tools and their application in evaluating long-range transport of wildfire smoke and Saharan dust in 2025.
How to attend:
The seminar will be streamed on Teams (invitation to the Teams meeting). Due to security regulations at the premises of NILU, we recommend that externals attend online. If you would still like to participate in person, please reach out as soon as possible to NILU, and remember to bring a valid form of ID.
What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):
- Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
- This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
- Normally seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1pm).
