Abstract:
This presentation will highlight current and recent projects studying the atmosphere in the Antarctic and the Arctic. The Antarctic research is a focus on the collection of year-round observations of precipitation at remote locations of Antarctica. The studies of the Arctic involve the application of the regional and global modeling simulations to develop a greater understanding of weather-scale features that comprise the long-term changing climate. The focus of the presentation will be on a study using the method of self-organizing maps (SOMs) to evaluate the atmospheric circulation of the Arctic across a range of CMIP6 models with a comparison between historical to end of century patterns. The presentation will close with an overview of the work that is currently being completed as a part of a Fulbright Visiting Scholar award at NORCE and University of Bergen for spring 2026. The project is a study of extremes in temperature and precipitation, and associated atmospheric circulation patterns, for the Nordic Region.
What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):
- Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
- This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
- Normally seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1pm).
