Abstract For the first time, this study presents interpretations of alluvial fans in spectral decomposition RGB Blends, analysed in seismic time slices from the Middle Triassic to Lower Jurassic stratigraphical interval of the Horda Platform (northern North Sea). The time slices record a shifting alluvial fan front, fluvial variability, uplift and erosion and reveals depositional elements that may set the common conception of the geological development of this area during the Early–Middle Mesozoic up for discussion. Results show that the Upper Triassic Lunde Formation in the eastern margin of the Horda Platform was characterized by the deposition of coalesced alluvial fans. A variable extent of the fan front through the Upper Triassic is linked to interplaying allogenic factors: uplifted source areas in the aftermath of Early–Middle Triassic rifting determined sediment availability; climate transitioning from arid to semi‐humid, with increasingly fluctuating precipitation, controlled sedimentation, and run‐off; provenance dictated bulk sedimentology and affected prevailing alluvial processes. An overall retreat of the fan system through the Late Triassic coincided with a significant change in landscape characteristics at the transition into the overlying Statfjord Group. Uplift and initial tilting of the Horda Platform caused landscape degradation and the formation of plateaus and incised valleys, contemporaneous with increased humidity and marine transgression, forming estuaries. The shift in depositional style has implications for reservoir properties, creating complexity and heterogeneity in terms of facies distribution and connectivity, which may benefit potential CO 2 storage. Upper Triassic alluvial fan development in the Horda Platform (northern North Sea) depicted through spectral decomposition of seismic time slices Enhanced level of seismic stratigraphic interpretation with RGB blending Impact of allogenic factors on alluvial depositional development Implications of alluvial variability on reservoir properties

Show summary
Brittle reactivation of plastic shear zones is frequently observed in geologically old terranes. To better understand such deformation zones, we have studied the >700 Ma long structural history of the Himdalen–Ørje Deformation Zone (HØDZ) in SE Norway by K–Ar and 40Ar–39Ar geochronology, and structural characterization. Several generations of mylonites make up the ductile part of HØDZ, the Ørje Shear Zone. A 40Ar–39Ar white mica plateau age of 908.6 ± 7.0 Ma constrains the timing of extensional reactivation of the Ørje mylonite. The mylonite is extensively reworked during brittle deformation events by the Himdalen Fault. 40Ar–39Ar plateau ages of 375.0 ± 22.7 Ma and 351.7 ± 4.4 Ma from pseudotachylite veins and K–Ar ages of authigenic illite in fault gouge at c. 380 Ma are interpreted to date initial brittle deformation, possibly associated with the Variscan orogeny. Major brittle deformation during the Early–Mid Permian Oslo Rift is documented by a 40Ar–39Ar pseudotachylite plateau age of 294.6 ± 5.2 Ma and a K–Ar fault gouge age of c. 270 Ma. The last datable faulting event is constrained by the finest size fraction in three separate gouges at c. 200 Ma. The study demonstrates that multiple geologically significant K–Ar ages can be constrained from fault gouges within the same fault core by combining careful field sampling, structural characterization, detailed mineralogy and illite crystallinity analysis. We suggest that initial localization of brittle strain along plastic shear zones is controlled by mechanical anisotropy of parallel-oriented, throughgoing phyllosilicate-rich foliation planes within the mylonitic fabric.

The Ottfjället Dyke Swarm (ODS) is a prominent component of the Ediacaran mafic magmatism associated with opening of the Iapetus ocean, and hosted in the Särv Nappe, Middle Allochthon of the Scandinavian Caledonides. A U-Pb baddeleyite age of 596.3 ± 1.5 Ma for a thick, well preserved, plagioclase-phyric dolerite dyke in Härjedalen, Sweden, dates emplacement of the swarm. The age represents a robust, inheritance-free reference age for variably deformed and metamorphosed tholeiitic dykes in sandstone-dominated sequences of the lower part of the Middle Allochthon, representing the proximal, rifted Baltoscandian margin preceding the opening of Iapetus. The new age is within the narrow time span between 610 and 595 Ma defined by the most reliable age estimates for mafic dykes in structurally higher nappes (upper part of Middle Allochthon), representing the distal margin during the opening of Iapetus. The Ottfjället Dyke Swarm cuts the Tossåsfjället Group succession, which includes sabkha-related carbonate platform and diamictite couples, one of several correlated Neoproterozoic glaciogenic successions in Scandinavia. The intrusion age of ca. 596 Ma therefore sets a minimum age for the glaciogenic successions. It implies that Neoproterozoic glaciations in Scandinavia predate the ca. 580 Ma Gaskiers glaciation event and are probably part of the ca. 635 Ma Marinoan “Snowball-Earth”-type glaciation.

Show summary
Non-glaciated mountain headwater catchments feature high-resolution geomorphic archives, which provide important insight into erosive processes and sediment dynamics in mountain ranges. As such the Valle de la Fueva catchments in the southern Pyrenees present high-lying talus remnants, extensive denudation surfaces (pediments), deeply incised tributary ravines, and low-lying fluvial-cut terraces. Based on geomorphic analyses and absolute dating using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides and optically stimulated luminescence, a (late stage) catchment erosion model for the Valle de la Fueva was elaborated and indicates successive development stages of (i) lasting pedimentation under cold-climate conditions during Marine Isotope Stages 4–2, (ii) rapid fluvial dissection, sediment remobilization and downcutting of ravines in response to the last major climate transition and establishing interglacial conditions, and (iii) late stage fluvial incision after 3–4 ka due to regionally increased flood magnitudes, and/or intensification of agriculture and forest management. Valle de la Fueva headwater catchment analysis indicated that the styles and magnitudes of basin surface processes were directly correlated with the amplitude and nature of paleoclimatic changes, modified by the interplay of environmental parameters. In contrast to large-scale fluvial systems, mountain headwater catchments seemed to be less afflicted with temporal and spatial averaging biases. They are thus useful targets for investigating direct climate change effects, surface process coupling, and non-linear response mechanisms in Quaternary fluvial systems.

Regional Early Cretaceous uplift of the northern Barents Sea associated with the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) caused the
development of the fluvial to open-marine depositional system, terminating in the southwestern Barents Sea. This study has established a new
temporal and spatial evolution of the Lower Cretaceous deposits in the Hoop area, in particular the location and age of the intrashelf platform
lobe front and subsequent block-faulting. A composite high-resolution 3D and 2.5D P-Cable and conventional 3D seismic dataset image the
strata and cross-cutting faults in the Hoop area. The P-Cable data typically have a resolution of 3–7 m in the shallow subsurface, up to four times
better than the conventional seismic data, contributing to a new and better mapping hence understanding of the Lower Cretaceous strata and
faults. Seismic horizon and facies mapping reveal large-scale clinoforms, with present-day heights of 150–200 m and dips of 0.65–1.13°. The highresolution
data furthermore display complex stratigraphic and structural features, such as small-scale clinoforms and numerous faults. The shelf
platform succession is block-faulted, and the main Early Cretaceous fault activity thus postdates the arrival of the delta and platform sediments
from the northwest. Detailed seismo-stratigraphic ties to the 7324/2–1 (Apollo) and 7325/1–1 (Atlantis) wells, and ties to the adjacent Fingerdjupet
Subbasin, document a Barremian age for the shelf platform deposits and an Aptian?–early Albian age for the main faulting event. The faulting was
likely initiated in the Aptian, but a hiatus or condensed section above the Barremian strata makes it difficult to constrain the onset of deformation
in the Hoop area.

Two nested clinoform set types of different scales and steepness are mapped and analysed from high‐resolution seismic data. Restoration of post‐depositional faulting reveals a persistent pattern of small‐scale, high‐angle clinoforms contained within platform‐scale, low‐angle clinothems, showing a combined overall progradational depositional system. The large clinoforms lack a well‐defined platform edge, and show a gradual increase in dip from topset to foreset. A consistent recurring stratal pattern is evident from the architecture, and is considered a result of interplay between relative sea‐level change and autocyclic switching of sediment delivery focal points that brought sediment to the platform edge. This un‐interrupted succession records how intra‐shelf platforms prograde. Quantitative clinoform analysis may assist in determining the most influential depositional factors. Post‐depositional uplift and erosion requires restoration with re‐burial to maximum burial depth. Backstripping, decompaction and isostatic correction was performed assuming a range of lithologic compositions, as no wells test the lithology. Nearby wells penetrate strata basinward of the clinoforms, proving mudstone content above 50%, which in turn guide restoration values. Typical restored platform heights are 250–300 m, with correspondingly sized platform‐scale clinoform heights. Typical large‐scale clinoform foreset dip values are 1.3°–2.4°. Small‐scale clinothems are typically 100 m thick, with restored foreset dip angles at 4.4° ‐ > 10°. The results suggest that intrashelf platform growth occurs in pulses interrupted by draping of strata over its clinoform profile. The resultant architecture comprises small‐scale clinoforms nested within platform‐scale clinothems.

We describe a sediment sequence comprising a thick till covered by thin beds of lacustrine sediments containing pollen and plant macrofossils derived from pioneer vegetation. Four consistent radiocarbon dates on terrestrial plant remains from the lacustrine sediments yielded an age of 10,500 calibrated years BP (cal years BP). This is the first accurate and precise age obtained for the deglaciation of the Mjøsa region in eastern Norway. We estimate that the ice-margin retreat rate in this area was about 250 m per year. Light-demanding herbs and Hippophaë rhamnoides were the first to colonise locally. When soils matured, birch immigrated to the area forming the first forests at around 10,200 cal years BP. This was rapidly followed by pine and aspen and, later, by black alder at c. 9000 cal years BP. The lacustrine sediments are covered by 50 cm of peat and capped by a two-metre thick, coarse-grained, debris-flow deposit. The latter was surprising because of the very gentle slopes, four degrees in the failure area and less than three in the run-out and depositional area. We propose that the landslide, postdating the top of the peat that is dated to 6360 cal years BP, was triggered by a strong earthquake.

The regional resultant stress field of the northeastern North Atlantic has shifted significantly throughout the Phanerozoic. In Fennoscandian parts of the Caledonian orogen, mountain building, which was characterized by NW-SE contraction (reference to present North), was followed by a collapse with transport both parallel and transverse to the mountain chain. The Late Palaeozoic – Mesozoic saw several stages of E-W to NW-SE extension, varying in time and position. Local episodes of inversion are traceable in some cases, particularly in connection with deep-seated and long-lived zones of weakness. The Cenozoic has to a larger degree been affected by compression, including folding and basin inversion. Again some of the more pronounced effects of local inversion are related to pre-existing fault systems. Neogene uplift of the western mountainous area in Scandinavia can be unravelled by potential field study, AFT data and reflection seismic sections. Assuming that the region is close to isostatic equilibrium, the uplifted areas must be supported at depth by substantial volumes of low-density material within the crust or the mantle, close to the crust/mantle interface or close to the lithosphere/asthenosphere interfaces.
A series of NW-SE-oriented cross-sections, representing successive stages of development from the late Caledonian to Present were prepared and used to analyse the tectonomorphological development as related to the shifting stress configurations. Three stages are inferred:
Stage 1; Devonian – late Permian denudation of the Caledonian mountain chain: During the latest stage of closing of the Iapetus Ocean in early to mid Devonian times, the Caledonian mountain chain reached its maximum elevation of perhaps as much as 8–9 km. Including the foreland basins to the east, the average topographic gradient of the eastern flank may have been in the order of 1,3°. The denudation of the Caledonian mountains continued into the Permian and by the end of the Permian, the mountain system was more or less obliterated with a gradient of the eastern flank probably continued to fall to less than 0,1°.
Stage 2; Triassic – late Cretaceous; Tectono-thermal uplift of central south Norway. Uplift of central south Norway was rejuvenated in Triassic times and continued throughout the Jurassic and early Cretaceous. The gradient of the eastern flank increased to a maximum of approximately 0,15° and master structural elements like the Lærdal-Gjende-Olestøl Fault Complex again played important roles in the development.
Stage 3; Tertiary – Present; Renewed tectono-thermal activity and post-glacial rebound. A second phase of post-Caledonian tectono-thermal uplift of south central Norway started in Oligocene time, again increasing the gradient of the eastern flank of south Norway (around 0,2°).

Basin Fill Dynamics of the Triassic Alluvial Succession on the Horda Platform, Northern North Sea.

Show summary
The Triassic continental succession west of the Øygarden Fault Complex in the northern North Sea is studied using 2D and 3D seismic lines integrated with well pattern analysis to discern the basin fill history and structural development of the area. The Øygarden Fault Complex is located within the N-S trending Horda Platform east of the deeply faulted Viking Graben. A series of large west-dipping faults bounding east-dipping half grabens characterize the Horda Platform area. The focus area is within a rotated fault block between the basement-bounding Øygarden Fault in the east and the Vette Fault in the west.
The Triassic fill forms a 1300 m eastward thickening unit, commonly regarded as part of the Late Triassic post-rift stage. A wedging of some intervals is however indicative of active faulting during deposition. Previous studies have subdivided the strata in the Tampen Spur area into a late Permian-early Scythian syn-rift basin fill and three post-rift phases; 1: Late Scythian to Ladinian, 2: Carnian to Norian, 3: Norian to Rhaetian, defined by bounding unconformities and depositional patterns. This study subdivides the Øygarden area succession into seismic facies where reflection patterns indicate depositional characteristics. Reflection pattern analyses reveal depositional features such as channels, hangingwall fans, and footwall fans. A shift in facies trend between mud and sand rich intervals indicates variance in subsidence rate and sedimentation supply related to tectonic displacement rate and climate. The climate changed from arid to semi-humid in the Latest Triassic according to studies from Tampen Spur: (1) a shift in palaeosol types, (2) increase in carbonate material, (3) seasonality indicated by isotope analysis, (4) absence of anhydrite, (5) an increase in abundance and thickness of the mud-dominated intervals related to an increase in pluvial lacustrine conditions, (6) a change in palaeolatitude, and (7) increased fluvial channel stability indicating increasing sinuosity. Humid climate results in denser vegetation, which strengthens levees and their channels. During increased runoff, the sediment yield increased, with correspondingly coarser grained material delivered to the basin. Models for sedimentation fill and stratal package geometries in rift systems can be applied to the Øygarden area. The analysis suggests a depositional system with N-S trending highs bounding narrow elongated basins. Alluvial fans prograded from the ranges into the basins. Changing subsidence rate and climatic variations controlled the magnitude and style of axial draining channels along with the dispersal and preservation of surrounding finer grained alluvial plain style deposits.

Show summary
In characterizing subsurface reservoirs for CO2 storage, the geological heterogeneity distribution is of importance with respect to the injectivity and migration paths. The object of this study is a saline aquifer of Jurassic age; the Johansen Formation of the Northern North Sea. Through scenario modeling the effect of site-typical geological heterogeneities of depositional origin have been tested. The existence of laterally continuous calcite cemented layers and draping mud layers of low permeability in association with flooding events, could compartmentalize the reservoir. This is not necessarily a disadvantage; however, as the sweep efficiency becomes higher when the plume is spread out, potentially increasing the effect of trapping mechanisms.
