Suprabasins – Sedimentary response to growth of major extensional fault systems

Rifts and rifted margins have faults with displacements much larger (>10 km) than the half-graben bounding faults normally considered in studies of rift basins. The down-dip and lateral evolution, and the syntectonic basins juxtaposed within this structures are only partly understood. This research target rift-margin highs of Utsira/Loppa/Frøya, the Norwegian Continental Shelf with internal and fringing basins.

About the project

The main focus of the Suprabasins project is on the development and modification of extensional basins linked to major, long-lived fault zones, with scopes into sedimentary architecture and associated distribution of reservoirs, footwall rebound controlling sedimentary fairways, landscape denudation as temporal sediment source, and burial history of basins. Proposed work is tailored to challenges of the prolific Frøya, Utsira and Loppa highs, which represent large, temporally constrained uplifts behind major rift-bounding faults.

Research scopes employ the most recent advances in tectonostratigraphic research and are developed in close dialogue with the industry. PETROMAKS 2 compliance are found in exploration and increased recovery, including Arctic areas.

Objectives

The joint effort of the Suprabasins collaboration will advance new knowledge for proven but challenging areas of the Norwegian Shelf, of value for exploration and production alike.

The main objectives of the project are to:

  • i) Place the prolific Utsira, Loppa and Frøya highs of the Norwegian Continental Shelf into a detailed temporal tectonostratigraphic framework,
  • ii) Connect the Utsira, Loppa and Frøya analyses with case studies of analogue basins, to develop new conceptual learning of significant innovative nature,  
  • iii) Develop models that will advance the geological toolbox for exploration of rifts and rifted margins worldwide.

The research team

Suprabasins – Sedimentary response to growth of major extensional fault systems project includes researchers from a variety of universities and research institutes in Norway and abroad.

The University of Oslo (UiO) is hosting the project, which is led by professor Alvar Braathen at the Department of Geosciences. Other scientists on the UiO team are Ivar Midtkandal, Miquel Poyatos-More, Christopher Serck, Lars Riber and Per Terje Osmundsen.
