Origin of volcanic ash in the Siberian Traps lava pile

In the Siberian Traps Large igneous province, several kilometers of lava stratigraphy is preserved. In general, there is little volcanic ash between the lava flows.

However, locally we find thick deposits of ash. We have borehole samples of ash from the lava pile near Norilsk and this project will aim at characterizing one of the thickest ash layers.

The overall question is to find out what type of eruption the ash came from.
