About the meeting
This year's Hylleraas Annual Meeting is hosted by the Tromsø node in Malangen Resort. The annual meetings are joint events between the Tromsø (UiT) and Oslo nodes (UiO) and organised by the Young Researchers Parliament (YRP).
About the hotel
The Hylleraas Annual Meeting 2025 will take place at Malangen Resort about an hour away from Tromsø. The resort is located by the Malangen fjord and surrounded by beautiful nature. We will be accommodated mostly in cabins by the sea and in a few hotel rooms.
More information can be found at the resort website.

Talks
Workshop with Visualize your Science
Dr. Moa Kristiansson (Physics) and Dr. Kess Marks (Chemical Physics)
both work for Visualize your Science, a nordic company focused on improving visual science communication, with an emphasis on scientist-to-scientist communications.
The workshop will be divided into two connected sessions. In the first part, we’ll explore the world of science visuals, examining various types, their purposes, and best practices for effective communication. The second part will focus specifically on poster design, offering practical insights and tips to help you create compelling and visually impactful scientific posters. Kess and Moa will also attend the poster session and will happily give poster feedback on request.
Open science, data management, CRISTIN
Bror-Magnus S. Strand (Open Science advisor)
Gulbrand Stålet Nilsen (subject librarian for Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biochemistry & member of the UiT Research Data Management support team)
This session covers how to make open science work day to day and introduces NVA, which replaces both Cristin and Duo/Munin. Part 1 distills “how to” open science: concrete steps to link datasets and software to your papers (repositories, persistent identifiers, metadata), handle preprints and publisher embargoes, and choose a fit-for-purpose license for research code. Part 2 focuses on NVA, how to register and upload publications, datasets, and software, linking projects and funders, ORCID integration. We also give a brief update on evolving research career assessment and what it means for your reporting. Throughout, we point to UiT library support you can use immediately, as well as those available through our colleagues at UiO.
HPC (high-performance computing)
Gabriel Gerez, Jørn Dietze (HPC group at UiT)
Computational Chemistry depends on High Performance computing.
It is therefore important to have a good understanding and skills on how to best use these resources.
In this talk, we will teach the basics of writing slurm job scripts, data handling and general best practices. We will also present an overview over the available machines, including the upcoming Olivia.
Moving from qualitative to quantitative modelling of chemical reactions
50 years of dialogue with chemists
Odile Eisenstein (ICGM Université de Montpellier and Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences)
Our lives are shaped by the numerous meetings and events we experience. My love of chemistry is the result of the barricades in the streets of Paris in May 1968. Not a bad start, actually. From that point on, I met many incredible and diverse people in France and abroad. This paved the way for me to progress from a time when one could discuss chemistry by drawing orbitals with a pencil and performing elementary calculations, to the present day, where the hope is to model 'correctly' chemical species and associated reaction mechanisms. I will recount a long period of collaboration with organic and organometallic chemists. Even though the quality of computations was increasing, the most important thing was to present the results in a way that they could comprehend and that would help them to rationalize their observations and progress to new experiments.
Posters and 5-minute presentations
We decided to change things up this year and instead of PhD students making the 5-minute presentations, we are asking PIs and senior researchers to present their research. Additionally, there will be a poster session mandatory for the PhD students and optional but encouraged for postdocs and master students.
Detailed information was sent to those concerned and the deadline for sending us the 5-minute presentations is August 25th.
There will be eight 5-minute presentations and we will vote at the end for the best one!
Free time activities
The hotel has a SPA with hot tubs and a sauna and offers many other activities such as paddle boards. The area is also great for hiking. The hotels homepage offers more details: activities and spa. Also, please not that these activities have to be self-organized (and, if applicable, self-paid).
