Title: The Quantum Edge: from Gaussians to real-time graphics

Abstract: In this talk, we explore a surprisingly deep connection between quantum chemistry, 3D deep learning for reality capture, and real-time graphics for the entertainment industry. From Gaussian primitives used in electronic structure theory to anisotropic Gaussians driving modern radiance fields, we trace a shared mathematical lineage that connects the molecular world to buildings, the defense industry, TV-studios and beyond. Along the way, I argue that quantum chemists are uniquely positioned to fill critical workforce gaps thanks to their cross-domain intuition, mathematical (and quantum) literacy, and computational mindset.
