As a PhD student I work on variety-aware machine translation. I am trying to investigate how machine translation systems handle variation and linguistic varieties, especially in Norwegian. My focus is on language norms, dialectal writing (both literary and spontaneous), and learner variation. I am also interested in how these systems appear, and how they are discussed in debates regarding Norwegian written language norms. In addition to Norwegian, I work on translation to and from English and Japanese.
I have previously worked on sentiment analysis, and it continues to be a field I am interested in. Most recently I worked on a project in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), on sentiment analysis on patient feedback data.
I am otherwise more informally interested in other arenas where natural language processing meets applied linguistics, such as lexicography and teaching Norwegian as a second language.
