Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves capturing CO2 from industrial and other sources, and permanently storing the gas in geological formations. Recent studies indicate that CCS is a promising, secure, and reliable long-term solution that can significantly contribute to reaching international climate goals and limit global warming (Flohr et al., 2021). There are several challenges in CCS, such as the high cost of monitoring large areas for a longer period of time, and to generate algorithms for real-time leakage detection based on large amounts of data (Dean et al., 2020). For automated real-time leakage detection, an accessible sonar image dataset would increase the progress of deep learning methods for detection, classification, and segmentation of sonar images (Steineger et al.,2022).
This PhD project is part of a larger international research project (Smart AUVs) aimed at an efficient CCS monitoring using autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and inspection, maintenance, and repair vehicle (IMR). The PhD project is aimed at developing acoustics-based and sensor based approaches for detection and characterization of gas seepage from the seabed with Hugin AUV and Eulume IMR.
