Welcome to the group, James

We welcome our new PhD research fellow James Claxton!

I am from the UK and came to Norway two years ago together with my Norwegian wife. This summer I graduated with an MSc in physics at UiO. I wrote my thesis on characterising palladium nanoparticles synthesised by bacteria. In bulk, palladium is not magnetic. But, at small sizes, it becomes magnetic. We used an instrument called an atomic force microscope (AFM) to image the magnetic interaction between the AFM and the palladium nanoparticles. This was never done before. With the vast amount of image data we collected, I began exploring how we could use deep learning to answer questions that would be time consuming for us to solve.

To research more in the area of deep learning and visual intelligence, I decided that a PhD in the DSB group was the best step for me. I will likely be working in remote sensing and research challenges in that area. My start date is mid-September so I may not be in the office for a few weeks. I’m looking forward to joining you and getting to know you all soon.
