Welcome to the group, Martine

We welcome our new PhD research fellow Martine Tan!

Hello! My name is Martine, and I have just joined the machine learning team here at DSB.

I have completed both by bachelor’s and master’s here at UiO, and graduated in June last year. For my bachelor’s I was part of the Mathematics and Informatics program. For my master’s I joined the Computational Science program, with the applied mathematics and risk analysis program option. I was lucky to have Øyvind Ryan and Anders Hansen as supervisors on my master’s thesis, which was about computational barriers in the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (lasso) minimization problem. The thesis shows that there are cases where it is impossible to compute solutions to lasso by use of algorithms. Similar results can be shown for other problems like basis pursuit, and even neural networks. My research interests are within machine learning and computer vision, and I have a mixed background in mathematics, including compressive sensing, statistical learning, and computability theory.

In my free-time I train karate, and like to ski both alpine and cross-country. I also like to play music, but consider myself to be a better listener than performer. I am excited to start my PhD journey, and to get to know everyone!
