The ROBIN group at UiO has since 2017 had an active international collaboration with leading universities in Brazil, Japan and the US. A number of our own master’s students have been undertaking their complete master’s thesis work abroad and likewise, there have been incoming students who have been doing parts of their master’s research in the ROBIN group in Oslo. This has resulted in many novel research results that have been published in international peer-reviewed conferences and journals. This year, two students did their projects abroad:
Ola Thorsen at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) in Brazil worked with deep learning techniques to classify four stages of Alzheimer’s disease by using MRI brain scan images. The goal of the work was to develop a robust and interpretable framework for early detection and disease stage classification of Alzheimer’s disease. He was hosted and locally supervised by Prof. Marley Vellasco and PhD fellow Lucas Martins Thimoteo.
Håkon Moe was at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (JPL), California, USA. He worked on improving the quality of stereo images of the moon taken from space. Accurate 3D maps are essential for future rover explorations of the moon to avoid underestimation of slope steepness and impassible areas. His local host and supervisor was Dr. Yumi Iwashita.
