Exploring the Role of Generative AI in Design Practices

This project focuses on a critical investigation of how AI can support not just prototyping, but the full spectrum of creative activities in design practice, e.g., ideation, collaboration, communication, and participation throughout the design process. The project emphasizes engagement with recent literature to understand how research envisions AI’s role in shaping design in combination with dialogue with current industry practices. Students will be encouraged to examine theoretical and methodological perspectives, and together with industry partners, explore how generative AI may reconfigure design processes by altering roles, responsibilities, and practices.

Investigating scenarios for designer–AI collaboration in creative work:

How might AI change the organization of design processes, including roles, responsibilities, and workflows? In what ways can AI open up new possibilities for collaboration, creativity, and participation in design? What current and future scenarios can we imagine where designers and AI work closely together to create or improve design practices?

Relevant themes for the framing of the master’s thesis may include the organization of design processes, the delineation of roles, the distribution of responsibilities among team members, and how generative AI can facilitate new or improved workflows.

In our ongoing projects, we have explored how generative AI can help give voice to groups who are often marginalized, e.g., how senior citizens can take part in ideation activities in Participatory Design when supported by generative AI.

This thesis topic is suitable for students eager to explore the intersection of technology and design. The topic can be approached from a technical perspective or a design-focused viewpoint without needing an extensive technical background.
