Research Infrastructure (2 students)

Data about patients and the delivery of health care services is the basis for clinical, epidemiological and public health research. Collecting data is an essential part of many health research projects and is typically resource-demanding and takes a long time. This project aims to improve our understanding of how existing data sources, specifically health management information systems (HMIS), can be leveraged for research purposes (so-called secondary use).

The project is based in the HISP-centre and focuses on DHIS2. DHIS2 is an open-source software used in many low- and middle-income countries as a Health Information System (HIS) for the collection, aggregation and presentation of health data in the public health sector. It is used for clinical practices and health management. The data in DHIS2 is also used for research purposes, but often this research faces challenges due to the multi-stakeholder nature of international research projects. The project will use the unique position of the HISP-centre in the DHIS2 ecosystem to investigate DHIS2 as a research infrastructure.

The project will be exploratory and scoped in collaboration with the students according to their background and interests. The two students should preferably write together. The following topics are potentially relevant:

  • Explore current practices, opportunities and obstacles for researchers to use data from HIS in their research

  • Explore relevant topics such as consent, privacy/anonymisation, data sovereignty/ CARE principles, open data/FAIR principles, international initiatives (such as the European Health Data Space (EHDS), etc.

  • Explore researchers’ needs related to data in HMIS

  • Survey the literature and describe state-of-the-art traits of research infrastructures

  • Develop models and prototypes to investigate how DHIS2 can best meet the researchers’ needs for research infrastructure

  • Suggest guidelines on how to design DHIS2 as a research infrastructure
