Energy impact of packet loss

Transport protocols, such as TCP and QUIC are used to establish millions of connections on the Internet every day. Many years of research and engineering has gone into making sure that their implementations operate as efficiently and correct as possible. They are both designed to provide reliable data delivery even if packets are lost or corrupted.

In this thesis we want to explore the energy efficiency aspect of the implementations of these protocols. How much energy is lost every day due to broken cables or unstable wifi connections? As part of this work we will measure the total power consumption from client to server to determine the cost of failures in terms of extra power consumption. Different implementations of TCP and QUIC will be evaluated.
