The words belong to Federico Mandrioli. The master student who is temporarely based in the Renewable Energy section at The University of Oslo (UiO), is currently performing an internship, funded by the Erasmus+ traineeship program, under the supervision of Professor Sabrina Sartori, University of Oslo (UiO) and Professor Erika Michela Dematteis, University of Turin (UNITO). The focus of his internship, is to acquire knowledge in computational tools, models, experimental techniques and skills that will enhance the development of his master's thesis in materials science. His 3 months stay in Norway is giving him an unique opportunity to challenge himself in several aspects.

Researches lightweight high entropy alloy used for solid-state hydrogen storage

25 year old Mandrioli from Turin, Italy, who holds a bachelor's degree in material science, collaborates with Postdoctoral researcher Bruno Hessel Silva, University of Oslo/ITS, on the research of multicomponent alloys incorporating lightweight elements for hydrogen storage. This work aims to expand Mandrioli’s expertise from theoretical and modeling aspects - to the synthesis and characterization of these novel alloys, with the goal of applying these materials to renewable energy systems based on solid-state hydrogen storage. All along with a focus on sustainability throughout the entire process.

Working on his master's thesis

- I am mainly working on my master’s thesis, which involves researching lightweight high entropy alloy that could be used for solid-state hydrogen storage, says Mandrioli, adding:

- Currently, I’m performing thermodynamic calculations and simulations to identify a suitable alloy that I will later synthesize and characterize in the laboratory. These calculations help determine the right proportions and combination of elements for the alloys.

Describe a regular day at the office at the Department of Technology Systems?

- During these first few weeks, I focus on thermodynamic calculations from 9/9:30 AM to noon, then again from 1:30 to 4 PM. Besides that, I enjoy having lunch with the PhD students and postdocs at ITS. We often have table tennis matches during breaks. I have connected with people like Bruno, who is helping me with my work and also with other PhD students whom I hang out with during the weekends.

- Every two weeks we have meetings with the Renewable Energy section, in which we update each other about the work. During those meetings, my supervisor Sabrina Sartori always provides great feedback on my progress and suggestions that helps me to adjust my work.

Why did you choose to spend time in Norway?

- One of my main goals is to benefit from Norway's expertise in renewable energy and my field of study, as this experience will provide invaluable insights for my future career. Additionally, I’ve always been fascinated by Norway’s culture and nature, which I now have the opportunity to experience every day. On top of that, working in such a collaborative and dynamic environment is an exciting opportunity.

What are, in your opinion, the benefits of choosing to be part of the Erasmus program?

-The Erasmus program is giving me the opportunity, first and foremost, to challenge myself. Beyond that, it allows me to gain international experience, explore different approaches to research, and broaden my perspectives in many areas. I also firmly believe it’s an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture and way of life.
