SpaceSys_1: In-orbit servicing for sustainable space operation

A more sustainable implementation and operation, even in space business, will help to enable activities also in the future, decrease costs, and reduce the risk in the mission. For increasing sustainability of space activities, there are different angles of attack. Sustainable space technology includes a wide span of aspects, from using available resources in space exploration (ISRU), to space debris mitigation, re-usability of technology such as rockets, but also decreasing the footprint of space activity on Earth or the Earth’s atmosphere.  In you master’s thesis you can explore possibilities to improve sustainability in the space sector.

In-Orbit Re-usability of Satellite Sub-systems

Latest since Falcon-9, the concept of re-usability has reached rocketry. But in orbit, disposal of complex satellite systems is still the norm, contributing to space debris and development and launch costs for each new space craft. Complex and expensive subsystems, such as antenna arrays, radios, cameras, payloads… are abandoned when the mission reaches end of life or another subsystem malfunctions. In this thesis, you will investigate opportunities of re-using subsystems that already are in orbit. Identify the subsystems that are most suitable for recycling and discuss benefits and constrains that have to be met, what are potential risks and how do you have to design a satellite that allows for re-usability of some sub-components. What is needed to improve interoperability of space systems in space exploration?  If time allows (60SP), you will define and design one aspect or component of a re-usable space system.
