Frequently asked questions

A set of frequently asked questions presented to the sysadmin staff.

Where can I get help?

See our contact page.

Is there any (financial) support for the purchase of a private laptop/tablet?

All PD/PhD employees will have access to a workplace with a desktop computer. In addition, all newly employed PD/PhD in full position can be reimbursed up to NOK 5,000 in connection with the purchase of a private laptop / tablet. This does not apply if you are employed on a project and have had/will have a laptop covered by the project.

  • The offer must be used within 6 months of joining.
  • Laptop/tablet is considered private and no support for installation, operation, or user support can be expected.
  • It is also important that the individual familiarizes themselves with UiO's rules for storing data.

Register expense reimbursement in the Self-service portal. Choose Cost allocation, Custom/other, and use Work order (K7): 102420283

I have a guest that's coming over...

See our page documenting how to request IT resources for guests, this should answer everything from wireless access to computational needs.

What are the IT policies?

We have a document available that presents the Departments IT policies.

How do I print from my laptop?

Use the mobilprint website. Log in and upload your document. PDF is preferred. Once it is uploaded, you can go to a printer and retrieve it as usual.

I have a lot of research data, where do I put it?

Not in your home directory. Use a shared research volume by your research group, or apply for a new one here.

My linux machine complains about a login keyring that I never use!

Do rm ~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring to get rid of the error message.

What wireless network (SSID) should I use?

You should use "eduroam". If you have a UiO email address, you should use "username@uio.no" as your login, and with your UiO password. You may also use other Eduroam credentials if you have them. Eduroam is a global initiative to allow users to roam freely and securely in over 70 countries and thousands of locations with a single username.

How do I connect remotely?

To reach our Linux machines, use Secure Shell (ssh) to connect to our network. From the Internet, the machine "login.math.uio.no" presents a persistent login server that should always be available. The fingerprints for this machine are:

  • ED25519 / SHA256: 3TZVNeVfIHzDU+Qjv8bqkUxMsG8IZ7n1RBrFFt0RUhE.

Note that this machine was updated on November 5th, 2022, see the relevant sysadmin message for more information and what to do if you have an old key and ssh fails.
