Njord Seminar with two Njord talks

Our own Daniel and Victor will kickstart the Seminar series Autumn 25 by presenting their work for us.

Daniel Guerreiro Holmedal: Phase field modeling of precipitation in fluid flow

I will be presenting a way of modeling chemical precipitation and dissolution using phase field theory. I will then discuss how this can be coupled to fluid flow. There are many practical examples of chemical precipitation in fluid flow. Examples of this are carbonates precipitating in basalt fracture networks, or mineral deposition in water supply pipes with hard water that causes the water pipes to clog over time.

Victor Cruces Chamorro: Liquid Water & Solid Interfaces

The interfaces between abstract liquids and solids are vital in many branches of science, especially in geoscience. For example, liquid water is essential for the transport of chemicals in precipitation reactions, hydration processes of some minerals that would produce chemical fractures, or erosions related to the expansion of ice.

Access to experimental data of interfaces is complicated due to the relatively small amount of particles compared to the bulk, and they are usually associated with significant uncertainties. Molecular simulations may be a helpful technique to understand the complex molecular processes at the atomic scale. Nonetheless, the computational cost of molecular simulations is highly related to the level of accuracy used to describe the particles in the simulation.

For this seminar, I will show one of the simplest potential representations of the particles and possible techniques that I could perform to help some projects in the Njord and Pore lab centres
