Title of the talk: Professional use of colour for accurate and accessible science graphics
Scientific visualization enhances our understanding of the natural world’s beauty and complexity. Despite its widespread use, it’s rarely part of geoscientist curricula. The science community alternates between self-educated, scientifically sound colour application and peer-endorsed misuse. Misuse can exclude readers or mislead them.
The study of human colour perception is extensive and long-standing. However, creating accessible and accurate scientific visualization with colour has become easy. All necessary aspects are understood, and tools exist.
This lecture provides basic knowledge to use colour effectively for visualizing various data, from simple bar plots to elaborate cross-disciplinary maps. Pioneering science-proof colour palettes and gradients are available as standalone files and built-in options in visualization software. To avoid colour confinement, I introduce the newest version of the Scientific colour maps (www.fabiocrameri.ch/colourmaps/) and its various palette and gradient types.
After this lecture, you’ll be equipped with the basics of colour use in your daily work. I hope you’ll become an advocate for scientific colour use, ensuring that after mastering insightful scientific results, we accurately show them to everyone.

Dr. Fabio Crameri, a PhD in Geophysics from ETH Zurich, worked on global-scale mantle convection in the Earth and other silicate planets at UCL (UK) and at CEED, UiO, from 2013 to 2020. He developed numerical models, post-processing tools, and concepts like „Ocean-plate tectonics“. He collaborated with experts to build the transdisciplinary Subduction Zone Initiation (SZI) Database and created the academic profile „ProAc“. Fabio also promoted accurate and inclusive science visuals through the open-access graphics collection s-ink.org, designed the „Scientific color maps“, and advocated for methodological changes in academia related to graphic design. Since 2020, he founded Undertone.design for academic graphic design and joined the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) as Communication Specialist.
