Title: Simulating granular materials : sand surfing and segregating magnets
Abstract: In this talk, I will present the Discrete Elements Method used to simulate granular materials, along with two examples of such systems self assembling into structures way larger than the grain size. One example arises from dragging a small boat across a granular bed, which creates ripples on the surface. Size segregation, or the Brazilian nut effect, is another common mechanism for pattern formation in nature or in the lab, and I will discuss the segregation induced by the aggregation of permanent magnets in a granular flow.
