Abstract:
Earth scientists have a critical role to play in communicating to the wider public what we know about how planetary threats and societal challenges, such as climate change, extreme natural events, resource conflicts and the energy transition. But whilst geoscientists increasingly are being encouraged to "go public" with our geoscience, what is less clear is what is the most effective way to do that. Drawing examples from earthquake hazard and geothermal energy exploitation, this talk explores the promises and pitfalls of popular "geoscience communication".
