Alix Osinchuk

Welcome to Alix, who will be working as a researcher on the CONTINENT project

A portrait of Alix

I completed my Ph. D. at University of British Columbia, Canada, where I investigated the microstructures from deformed rocks to infer the ductile deformation mechanisms and stress conditions associated metamorphic chemical changes. My research interests lie between the intersection of metamorphic petrology and rock deformation, thereby utilizing both broad geological context from field studies in tandem with rock deformation experiments. While rock deformation experiments are a newly-minted passion, my love of field work started with my B. Sc. and M. Sc. where I studied the petrogenesis and tectonic evolution of 1.8 Ga lower-crustal metagranitoids from the Canadian arctic archipelago.

I've joined Njord Centre and the CONTIENT project, where my primary project will utilize nanoindentation mapping paired with a variety of electron microscopy techniques to understand how the mechanical properties correspond to dislocation density and other potential lattice defects in individual damaged minerals. Broadly the aim is to take a mechanistic view of how minerals respond to cyclic, high transient stress associated with earthquake nucleation in the lower crust.

I'm excited to start here at Njord and chat about all aspects of petrology, deformation microstructures, or arctic fieldwork - Or, you can make me blab on about making the perfect cup of coffee or the next long bike ride!
