Hui Yang

Welcome to Hui, who joined us in October!

A portrait of Hui

I received my B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from Central South University in 2015 and my Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in 2021. From 2022 to 2023, I continued my research under the PolyU–ETH Zurich Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. Subsequently, from July 2023 to August 2025, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Toronto, Canada.

My research integrates advanced laboratory techniques, including ultrasonic measurements, acoustic emission monitoring, high-speed optical imaging, and split Hopkinson pressure bar testing, to investigate mechanical and physical processes in geomaterials. My work has focused on (1) hydro-mechanical-seismic behaviors in intact and fractured rocks, (2) multiscale rock fracturing and damage processes across a wide range of loading regimes, (3) fluid–rock interactions and their influence on rock mechanical and physical properties.

Since October 2025, I have been a researcher at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo. In this role, I will extend my research to investigate fault slip development and the associated on- and off-fault damage evolution at coseismic strain rates via synchrotron X-ray imaging and advanced image-processing methods, aiming to enhance the mechanistic understanding of rupture processes and earthquake physics.
