C4Bat Battery-Grade Carbon for Sodium-ion batteries

Duration
01.02.2025–31.01.2029

Na-ion batteries (NIBs) can provide an alternative to commonly used Li-ion batteries (LIBs) in applications where energy density is not as crucial, such as stationary storage or short-range mobility. Even though NIB utilizes more abundant materials, environmental impacts and costs are not yet favorable compared to leading LIBs currently in mass production.

Contact

In this project, NIB anode materials based on hard carbon (HC) will be produced and validated in a full cell level using the pilot prototyping line connected to the NABLA infrastructure and available at IFE. The precursors will be nationally sourced, both from forestry waste and from industrial carbon supplied by the industrial partners. These material choices will both reduce the need for the import of critical materials, as well as promote sustainability and local value creation. To complement the development of the syntheses of hard carbons from various sources, a thorough characterization effort will be performed in the project. By understanding the fundamental storage mechanisms, the hypothesis is that this will also allow for optimized HC production processes. The development of hard carbon materials for NIB is also well aligned with the Norwegian battery strategy, especially actions 1 (leadership in sustainability) and 10 (tomorrowʼs battery solutions), while also promoting action 5 (enhance access to competence) through education from M.Sc. to post-doctoral level.

The project is organized in 5 work packages (WPs), with 4 technical WPs focused on material synthesis, electrochemical and structural characterization as well as evaluation of environmental and economic sustainability.
