High-performance tandem heterojunction solar cells for specific applications (SOLHET)

About the project

This project, titled High-performance tandem heterojunction solar cells for specific applications (SOLHET), is developed by 5 European partners.

The project aims at increasing the conversion efficiency of silicon solar cells beyond the traditional limitations of this technology by developing high-performance silicon based tandem heterojunction solar cells using low-cost, abundant, and non-toxic oxide materials. The realization of such solar cells can potentially have a massive impact on the PV field with obvious economic and environmental benefits.

 

Objectives

The objectives of the SOLHET project include:
A) Research on materials for a new generation of silicon based tandem heterojunction solar cells focused on low cost thin film metal oxides, with the oxides having tunable properties targeting (i) efficient absorber layers and (ii) highly conductive and chemically stable transparent layers.
B) Develop and adopt state-of-the-art modelling and simulation tools for design optimization of a new generation silicon based tandem heterojunction solar cells.
C) Fabrication of silicon based tandem heterojunction solar cells with a power conversion efficiency above 25 %.
D) Demonstration and promotion of high-performance PV module made from silicon based tandem heterojunction solar cells.
E) Patenting the original / innovative results of new solar cells/PV modules at European / national level.
