Behavior, ecology & conservation of gelada monkeys at Guassa, Ethiopia

Friday seminar by Peter J. Fashing & Nga Nguyen

Abstract

We will provide summaries of our past, present, and future research on gelada monkeys (Theropithecus gelada) at Guassa, Ethiopia, our long-term field site in the Ethiopian Highlands (2007-present). Geladas are a little-known cercopithecine primate endemic to the highlands of Ethiopia, where they are found in isolated pockets of alpine grassland with other Ethiopian endemics like Ethiopian wolves (Canis simensis). We will focus our talk mostly on the projects we currently have underway at Guassa (e.g., sexual conflict & birth seasonality, ranging and feeding ecology, gelada-wolf interactions, & gelada status, distribution, and health), but will highlight some of our relevant past research as well.
