The Crustal Processes section at the Dept of Geosciences does research and teaching in the fields of geology, geophysics, petrology and geochemistry. Our research uses field work, analytical and imaging techniques, modelling, data science, and experiments, and aims to unravel the processes that shape the short-term (earthquakes, volcanoes) and long-term (tectonics) evolution of the Earth’s crust, and their effects on the environment. We participate in the geoscience-physics research centre Njord, UiO.

Njord
Njord is a multidisciplinary research centre at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at University of Oslo working at the interface between physics and geology. The focus is on research to provide fundamental and quantitative understanding of the complex patterns and processes of the Earth. The research team includes professionals from the Dept. of Geosciences and the Dept. of Physics.
Interface Dynamics in Geophysical Flow (EarthFlows)
The research focus for the EarthFlows group cover the geosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere, including the behavior of the complex interfaces separating ‘Fluid Earth’ from ‘Solid Earth’. The goal for the research group is to provide fundamentally new understanding of the dynamics of fluid-solid interfaces for a number of important geophysical systems.
Research collaboration
The section, formerly part of the COE-Centre “Physics of Geological Processes – PGP”, participates now in the cross-disciplinary research centre Njord-Centre, UiO.
