Close to the threshold of black hole formation a variety of fascinating critical behavior, with direct relevance to cosmic censorship, are manifest.
Since there is no hope to obtain general solutions to the field equations of general relativity in this highly dynamical regime, we must turn to numerical methods.
In this talk I will therefore give an introduction to the fundamentals of numerical relativity, focusing afterwards on open problems, and in particular the ongoing challenges in treating the threshold of collapse.
A snapshot of the curvature (Kretschmann scalar) taken from a gravitational wave spacetime near the threshold of collapse. In this regime finer and finer features are generated. These features may result in the creation of a naked singularity. Credits: David Hilditch.
