Fredagskollokvium: Extreme Spacetimes and their Numerical Approximation
David Hilditch, Center for astrophysics and gravitation, University of Lisbon.

Close to the threshold of black hole formation a variety of fascinating critical behavior, with direct relevance to cosmic censorship, are manifest.
Since there is no hope to obtain general solutions to the field equations of general relativity in this highly dynamical regime, we must turn to numerical methods.
In this talk I will therefore give an introduction to the fundamentals of numerical relativity, focusing afterwards on open problems, and in particular the ongoing challenges in treating the threshold of collapse.
